-The weekend after going to the Aran Islands, Beth and I were hired for a promotional job for Southern Comfort at a local pub, Fibber McGees. To be completely frank, it was absolutely horrible. No one was there to tell us what to do (like how to mix the drinks!), we had no personal space to set up, and drunk guys were clamoring all over us and trying to steal our top hats and earrings. That's all I'll say about that.
-That following Monday (19/10), I went in for a job interview at Galway Bay Seafoods. I got hired on the spot to be one of two people in charge of producing the fish cakes, kebabs, and herb-crusted fish fillets that are sold in their seafood shop. Hooray! I came back for training later that day and had my first day of work the next day. It's 8-5 every Tuesday and it's fun, hands-on work. (I will try to get a more detailed post about my work experience since then).
-Friday (23/10) Theresa and I paid a spontaneous visit to Cork for the renowned Jazz Festival. We literally decided the night before that we should make the trip, and we took the very first bus the next morning at 7am. Since it was a four hour bus ride, we arrived in Cork at 11am, ready to take in as much free music as possible before catching the last bus back to Galway at 6:15pm (not a lot of time, I know!) It was so strange to be in such a big city after being in little Galway for so long! Cork seemed HUGE! It has a very similar set up as Dublin, the city spanning both sides of a river with many bridges connecting it together. Theresa and I ate lunch straight away at the first cafe we could find, then wandered over to the English Market. Man we were mad we had just scarfed down some mediocre bagels! There were tasty, tempting treats galore at the market and we decided we would have to return that evening to buy dinner before taking the bus home. From there, we located the tourist office to get more info about the festival. After selecting some potential venues, we set out towards the university to catch our first act. We arrived a little late, but we managed to catch about an hour of a jazz band playing some very pleasant music. They had a guest singer as well and she was absolutely amazing. The next place we went to was at a hotel. The band there was pretty mediocre, but not terrible. Our last place was at another hotel's restaurant, close to the bus station. We found seats and had a lovely chat with a man visiting from Liverpool. He was a musician himself and had been coming to Cork for the festival for several years. He knew the saxophonist who was playing with the band, and when they started playing we were very impressed! I was sad we had to leave to catch the bus after only a few hours in the city. I definitely hope to return to Cork and explore it more!
