Yesterday morning, Beth and I went down the road to the Garda National Immigration Bureau to register and get our ID cards. We knew it might be a bit of a long process, but we had no idea just how much time it would actually take. After filling out a form, we obtained a number to wait to be called to a window. I was #118 and they were on #54 when we arrived. In the first two hours, they had reached #78. At this point, we decided we would leave and go eat lunch and come back. Good choice, as an hour later they were just finally at #101. Luckily, once we were called to a counter it went pretty smoothly. The young woman helping me wasn't familiar with the USIT program and had to get some help, but it all worked out. They took my photo and scanned my index fingers, then printed up an ID card and sent us on our way. All in all it took 4 hours.
Needless to say, we were ready to head to the Old Jameson Factory and finally try some whiskey! The tour itself was fairly interesting, though everything was a replica as all their production is done near Cork now. At the end, though, we were given a free drink! Beth got chosen to do the whiskey taste test, where she was given small cups of Jameson, Scotch whisky, and American bourbon to compare. She let me try them all as well, and I'm sorry to say whiskey just doesn't do it for me straight up. Mixed with ginger ale as I ordered it was superb, however! We stumbled our way through the old Viking part of town, past old cathedrals and the Dublin castle, before grabbing dinner and heading back to the hostel.
So step 2 is complete. Now it's time for the next one: find a place to live!
