Completing Step One and a Unique Tour of Dublin

Step One: Buying an Irish mobile phone!

Beth and I made our way to Henry Street today, home of two shopping malls and many MANY mobile phone stores. And no, not a lot of different companies, just a lot of stores for the same few companies within just blocks of each other. We learned at orientation that our main options were O2, Vodaphone, or Meteor, so we went to each of their shops to find out about their services. We decided O2 was the best option, since for 60Euro we got a phone with 60Euro of credit on it (essentially the phone was free). It's a pay as you go system where you just top it up with more credit as you need it. The plan gives us free calls and texts within the network and it's only 30c a minute to call the States, which really isn't terrible. And it doesn't cost me anything to receive calls or texts! (hint hint) If you want to call, dial 011-353-86-329-8242.

The rest of the day was spent doing an amazing scavenger hunt set up by the USIT office. A bunch of people from the program met up and we were placed into groups and given a long list of places to go to and tasks to perform throughout the city. It was such a fun way to see everything and I think we did a very impressive job accomplishing the tasks considering the four of us in our group have not been in Dublin very long. Everyone met up at a local pub at 5, the winners were determined (not us, I'm afraid), and we were given free food! It was great to chat with some people who have been here for some time already and to get their advice.
